Santa Barbara – Are federal farm subsidies being used to create products that cause health issues?
That’s the conclusion of a study by the CALPIRG group.
Speaking at the Sansum Diabetes Research Center in Santa Barbara, the group claims federal funds are creating ingredients for items like Twinkies instead of making more fresh fruit available, especially for children.
“Our report also found that between 1995 and 2010, $19.9 billion have gone to subsidize four main ingredients for junk food: corn syrup, high fructose, corn starch and soy oil,” said Manny Rin, CALPIRG.
CALPIRG is meeting with Congresswoman Lois Capps tomorrow to talk about the upcoming farm bill discussions and where priorities should be for federal farm subsidies.
